CALBOURNE is a parish and village with a station 1 mile north from the village on the Freshwater, Newport and Yarmouth railway, about 5 miles west-by-south from Newport and 5 south-east from Yarmouth. |
The Caul Bourne rises in the parish. |
The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Norman and Gothic styles, and consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, north transept, north and west porches and a tower : the church was thoroughly restored in 1842, at a cost of GBP2,550, and affords 264 sittings. |
There are remains of two British villages in the parish. |
Sir John Walter Barrington Simeon bart. J.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. |
The area is 7,573 acres of land and inland water; the population in 1931 was 757, including part of NEWTOWN, which was transferred to this parish from Shalfleet, March 24, 1889, for civil purposes, and 583 in the ecclesiastical parish. |
