BRIGHSTONE (or Brixton) is a parish and village, about 7 miles south-west from Newport and 14 west from Ventnor, bounded on the south-west by the sea. |
The Buddlehole stream flows into the sea at Grange Chine. |
The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, with Norman arcade, there are 300 sittings. |
There is a Methodist chapel at the west end of the village, to which a Sunday school is attached. |
A church hall, given by the late Joseph E. Gunyon esq. was erected in 1928. |
James Attrill esq. is the principal landowner. |
The area is 4,934 acres of land and inland water; the population in 1931 was 755 in the civil and 500 in the ecclesiastical parish. |
By the Isle of Wight Review Order, 1933, the parishes of Brook and Mottistone were added to this parish for civil purposes. |
LIMERSTONE is a hamlet in this parish, a mile east. |
Chilton is a hamlet, partly in Brighstone and partly in Mottistone parishes, a mile south-west. |
By Local Government Board Order 22,428, dated March 24, 1889, Atherfield Farm was transferred to Shorwell, and under the provisions of the Divided Parishes Act, 1882, Atherfield Green has also been transferred. |
