St Lawrence, Civic |
The parish of St. Lawrence, one of the smallest in the kingdom, had 135 inhabitants in 1871, extends over 327 acres of land and one of water, and includes the Royal National Consumptive Hospital containing 21 patients at the time of the last census. |
The Hon. Evelyn Anderson Pelham has a pretty marine residence here, called St. Lawrence Cottage. This villa was erected in the latter part of the last century by the late Sir Richard Worsley, as an appendage to his neighbouring seat of Appuldurcombe. |
In a leafy dell, under a neat Gothic building, is St. Lawrence's Well, which pours its delicious waters through a dolphin's mouth into a stone basin. |
The little antique Church (dedicated to St. Lawrence) is now used as a mortuary chapel. The churchyard has been enlarged. |
The new Church, was built in 1876, at a cost of 4,000GBP, from designs by Sir G. G. Scott, R.A. |
