The Honorable Lady Gordon is the lady of the manor of North Shorwell, and is seated at Northcourt House, a fine old mansion, built in the reign of James I., by Sir John Leigh and his son, and much improved about 40 years ago by the father of its present owner, the late General Sir James Willoughby Gordon, who was created a baronet in 1818 for his military services. |
The Church (St. Paul) [actually, St. Peter] is one of the most interesting in the Isle of Wight. It was judiciously restored in 1848, at the cost of 1,300GBP. The parsonage house is here, and was built in 1780, and improved in 1819, 1850, and 1875. |
