Shanklin, Civic
Shanklin is a parish, it had 355 inhabitants in 1851, 479 in 1861, and 1432 in 1871, and extends over 675 acres of land.
It is governed by a Local Board, to which Mr. Thomas H. Urry, of Ventnor, is clerk.
It has been much improved during the last 20 years, and has now about 3000 inhabitants, and also large hotels, and many villas and commodious lodging-houses.
It is lighted by gas, Mr. William Sutherland is secretary to the company.
Here are upwards of 50 bathing machines and commodious hot and cold baths ; and there is a good library at Mr. Thomas Johnson's.
Francis White-Popham, Esq., of Wootton, is lord of the manor and owner of most of the soil, and has a marine villa here, called Eastcliff.
Whitwell House is the residence of Miss Harriett Parr, the celebrated novelist.
Shanklin Church (St. John the Baptist) is a small ancient structure, supposed to have been built in the reign of King Stephen. The living was formerly a curacy, consolidated with Bonchurch rectory, but it is now a separate donative.
St. Paul's Church [also mentioned under Sandown] is a lofty structure, consecrated on July 26, 1876. The site was given by the late Admiral Carter, and the site for the intended parsonage by his son, the Rev. W. E. Carter. The district was formed into a separate ecclesiastical parish on December 7, 1876. Funds are being collected for the erection of the parsonage, donations having been received from the patron and Dowager Lady Hatherton, and a grant from the Hampshire Church Association.
St. Saviour's-on-the-Cliff is a neat building opened in 1869 at a cost of 2,800GBP, and enlarged in 1871, at an expense of 871GBP, further enlarged in 1875, at an outlay of 400GBP, and again in 1876, at a cost of 1000GBP. The site was given by F. White-Popham, Esq.

The Congregationalists, Wesleyans, and Bible Christians have Chapels here.
The Parish Schools have been erected on a site given by F. White-Popham, Esq., J.P., Lady Hatherton contributing 1500GBP towards the expense.
Shanklin Literary and Scientific Institute, established about 20 years ago, is now held in a building erected in 1876 on Prospect Road, at an expense of 2000GBP. There are about 100 members, is well supplied with the London and local newspapers, periodicals, &c., and has a good library. Mr. W. A. Allen is honorary secretary, and Mr. Alfred Mew librarian.
The Shanklin Hurkara (Sat.) was established in 1876 and is published by Messrs. Lloyd & Smith.
The Esplanade, which is upwards of 1800 feet long by 30 wide, was constructed by the late Edward Thirsk, Esq., at a cost of 25,000GBP ; it was completed in 1876, and contains valuable sites for villa residences facing the sea.
