Shalfleet, Civic
Shalfleet, a parish and pleasant village, on the banks of a rivulet, which falls into Newtown Creek, on the high road between Newport and Yarmouth.
Its parish contains 1195 inhabitants, and 6315 acres, extending 2 miles northward to the Solent Sea, and 4 miles southward to the southern shore of the Island, where it terminates in a narrow strip near Sodmere Point.
It comprises the scattered hamlets and farms called Ningwood, Hulverstone, Hamstead, Newbridge, Wellow, Chessell, Boldner, Porchfield, Dodpits, &c.
Lord Heytesbury is lord of the manor of Shalfleet. John Pennethorne, Esq., is owner and occupier of Hamstead, which comprises about 1000 acres of land that was brought into high cultivation from a state approaching to sterility about 80 years ago, when the larger farmhouse was erected by the late J. Nash, Esq. Hamstead House, the seat of J. Pennethorne, Esq., is a neat mansion, commanding extensive views across the Solent Sea into the New Forest, &c. He is also lord of the manors of Ningwood, or Lingwood, and Wellow.
Chessell belongs to Lord Heytesbury.
William Way, Esq., and Sir J. B. Simeon, Bart., J.P., have estates in the parish.
Shalfleet Church is an ancient structure, with a low but massive Norman tower, which has been crowned by a short brick spire.
There is a Baptist Chapel at Wellow ; an Independent Chapel at Porchfield ; a Primitive Methodist Chapel at Ningwood ; a Bible Christian Chapel at Newbridge ; and a Primitive Methodist Chapel at Newbridge.
The National School, at Ningwood, was built in 1850, at the cost of 750GBP ; and there is an Infants' School at Newbridge.
