Northwood, Civic
Northwood. A parish and a small scattered village. Stands on the western side of the Medina river.
Northwood Parish, which includes the town of West Cowes, extends over 4860 acres of land, bounded on the east by the Medina river, on the south by Parkhurst Forest, and on the north and west by Cowes Roads and Gurnard and Thorness Bays. The parish had 2771 inhabitants in 1801, 3579 in 1821, 6049 in 1851, 6534 in 1861, and 7374 in 1871.
Parkhurst Prison is partly in this, and partly in Carisbrooke parish.
Palance Gate, formerly extra-parochial, is stated to have been incorporated with Northwood parish, and had 21 inhabitants, in 1871.
The parish also includes the farms &c., called Rew Street, Thorness, Sticelett, Nodes, Medham, Scutsgate, Horn Hill, Stragwell, Crockers, Crockleton, and Mark's Corner.
The increase in population is owing to the growing importance of West Cowes, both as a port and a fashionable bathing-place.
Two rivulets run northward through the parish to Thorness and Gurnard Bays, and several short ones run eastward to the Medina estuary, on the west bank of which are the cement works.
William George Ward, Esq., the lord of the manor, owns about four-fifths of the parish.
Northwood Park contains more than 200 acres, and has a large and handsome modern mansion, in the Palladian style, which commands delightful views across the Solent to the New Forest, Southampton Water, &c., but is now unoccupied. Near it is West Hill, the pleasant seat of the Misses Ward (in West Cowes).
Northwood Church (St. John the Baptist), is a small ancient structure, and was restored in 1864, at a cost of between 800GBP and 900GBP, the Misses Ward contributing 500GBP.
Northwood National Schools was built about nineteen years ago, at the cost of about 1,400GBP, by the Misses Ward, who have also endowed them.
