Mottiston, Civic
Mottiston (or Motteston) a parish and small village, situated on the south side of its lofty Down, near the rocky cliffs of the south-western coast of the Isle of Wight, in the vicinity of Brook and Chilton Chines.
The parish contained 140 inhabitants in 1871, and comprises 1100 acres of land, including Hoxall Green, Southmore, Pit Place Farm, &c.
A winding road, through a deep gully, leads up Mottiston Down to two large Druidical stones, commonly called Longstone, one of them being 13 feet high and six and a half feet in diameter.
Near the village is Castle Hill, supposed to be an ancient British earthwork.
Charles Seely, Esq., M.P., is lord of the manor and owner of most of the parish.
The old Manor House, now occupied by a farmer, was built in 1567, and was long the seat of the Cheeke family.
The Church (St. Peter and St. Paul) is a small ancient structure. The Register dates from 1680. The incumbency is held by the Rev. R. Broughton, M.A., who resides at Shorwell. The Rev. J. P. Gaze, of Brook, is the curate.
The parish sends three free scholars to Brixton School.
