Havenstreet, Civic |
Havenstreet is a hamlet and ecclesiastical district, mostly in the North division of Newchurch parish, and partly in that of Arreton. The district was formed in 1853, and had 257 inhabitants in 1871. |
The church (St. Peter) is a small structure erected in 1852, at the cost of 560GBP, raised by subscription. The site was given by J. W. Fleming, Esq., and the chancel was built at the sole expense of the Rev. Frederic Kent. The church has 150 sittings, all free. The incumbent, the Rev. F. S. Stockdale, B.A., built a good vicarage house in 1868. |
The school was erected in 1859 by the incumbent, at a cost of about 200GBP. |
The Wesleyans have a small chapel here, built in 1833. |
There is a pleasant seat here called Beaulieu, in the possession of H. Grissel, Esq. |
