The parish of Calnourne extends over no less than 5539 acres, stretching four and a half miles northwards from Westover Down to Newtown Bay, and including the small disfranchised Borough of Newtown, which had 113 inhabitants in 1871, when the rest of the parish contained 531 persons. |
Swainston, about one and a half miles east of the village, is the seat of Sir John Barrington Simeon., J.P., the present lord of the manor, which passed to him from his mother, who was the heiress of the late Sir Fitzwilliam Barrington, Bart., whose family was long seated here. |
