Brighstone, Civic
Or BRIXTON parish includes Chilton and Jackman's, Barnes Grange, and Cowleaze Chines in the bold range of Wealden Cliffs.
Brixton parish contained 614 inhabitants in 1871, and comprises 3114 acres of land, of which 1 acre is water. It includes Lymerston, Marsh Green, and Thorncross hamlets, and part of Chilton hamlet, the latter of which is partly in Mottiston parish. Charles Seely, Esq., M.P., is lord of Brixton manor ; W. H. Sloane Stanley, Esq., is lord of the manor of Lymerston ; and Sir Henry Mildmay, Bart., is lord of Waytes Courts manor.
Atherfield farm, near Atherfield Point and Rock, at the east end of Brixton Bay, belongs to Lady Mary Gordon.
Brixton Church (St. Mary) is an ancient structure, chiefly built in 1350 and 1550; it was restored in 1852-3, at the cost of 1,000GBP.

In 1814 the Rev. Noel Digby, a late rector, gave a cottage and 20A. 3R. 17P. of land for the foundation of a National School for 17 poor children of Brixton and 3 of Mottiston parish. The cottage and land have been sold and the proceeds invested in the Funds. The school was built in 1837, at the cost of 390GBP, and enlarged in 1845, at the cost of 105GBP.
