Binstead, Civic
The parish of Binstead comprises 1207 acres of land and, in 1871, there were 748 inhabitants.
The parish extends westward to Fishbourne Creek where there is a fishing hamlet, a Coast Guard Station, a shipbuilding yard, and nearby, the ruins of Quarr Abbey.
At the Dissolution, the abbey was granted to George Mills, a merchant of Southampton, who pulled the principle buildings down for the materials. The abbey estate was afterwards purchased by Lord Chief Justice Fleming, an ancestor of its present owner, J. B. W. Fleming, Esq., of Stoneham Park.
The Holy Cross church was rebuilt in 1844, at a cost of 1800GBP, the north aisle was erected in 1875, at an outlay of 800GBP, raised by subscription.
A small new burial-ground was opened in 1859.
Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1866.
The Mixed School was erected in 1854, the Infant School in 1871, at a total expense of 1,000GBP, defrayed by parochial subscription, aided by Government grant.
