Bembridge, Civic |
An ecclesiastical district formed in 1827, embracing all that part of Brading parish extending eastward along the south side of Brading Haven to Bembridge Point, and thence southward along the sea cliffs to the Foreland, Whitecliffe Bay, and Culver Cliffs. |
It had 862 inhabitants in 1871, and comprises 1631 acres. |
Bembridge Ledge, a dangerous reef of rocks, stretches into the sea a considerable distance, and beyond it is the floating beacon light, known as the Nab. |
The Holy Trinity church was built in 1827, at a cost of 2,400GBP, but its foundation being insecure, it was pulled down in 1845, and rebuilt at an outlay of 2095GBP. The benefice is a vicarage, valued at 100GBP, in the patronage of the vicar of Brading. |
The Wesleyans have a chapel here built in 1844, at the expense of 180GBP. |
Here is a good Library of about 700 volumes, founded in 1850 by the Hon. H. A. Moreton. |
Bembridge Reading Room was established in 1870, and is supplied with the daily and weekly newspapers, periodicals, &c., and has about 30 members and several honorary subscribers. |
