Arreton, Civic |
Arreton is the largest parish in the Isle of Wight. It extends over 9186 acres of land, and had 1910 inhabitants in 1871. |
Charles Wykeham Martin esq., is lord of Arreton Manor. |
Hensley manor is in the hands of trustees. |
R. Paris (Pittis ?) Esq., has an estate here. |
The church of St George is an ancient structure of the 12th century; within the churchyard is a stone erected by subscription in 1822 marking the remains of a very humble individual, Elizabeth Wallbridge, better known as 'the Dairyman's Daughter', as recorded by the late Rev. Legh Richmond. |
The Wesleyan and Bible Christians have several small chapels in various parts of this large parish. |
Arreton School was built in 1872, there are also schools at Rookley and Wootton Bridge. |
In 1688 John Mann, Esq., left a yearly rent-charge of 46GBP out of his estate at Sheriff's Hutton, in Yorkshire, to be applied in schooling and setting up poor children of Arreton parish. The Earl of Carlisle owns the estate, and after deducting land-tax, he remits the remainder to the overseers of this parish. |
