WOOTTON is a parish in the East Medina liberty, distant 3 miles W. of Ryde, and 4 N.E. from Newport, between the Motherbank on the north, and an inlet of the sea on the east ; the latter is crossed by a causeway on the high road to Newport.
The living is a rectory, annual value GBP240, with residence, in the gift of Frank White Popham, Esq., and held by the Rev. Robert Hilton Scott. The church (St. Edmund) is an ancient stone edifice in the Gothic style, With a Norman doorway ; it consists of body and chancel without aisles, and contains marble tablets to the White and Shute families.
The Wesleyans have two places of worship here.
The village is remarkably clean, the houses rising on each side of Fishbourne Creek.
Under the favourable circumstance of a high tide, in a calm sunny day, the traveller is here presented with an extensive landscape of the richest character, but particularly so in looking southward of the village, where the river widens to a beautiful lake. On the one side the retiring banks are steep and irregular, and feathered from the very water's edge with the most flourishing oak woods in the island.
The parish comprises 1,051 acres, and a population of, in 1861, 79.
WOOTTON BRIDGE is a neat village adjoining this parish, but is in the parishes of Arreton and Binstead, The turnpike road from Newport and Cowes to Ryde passes through this village.
