WHITWELL, a parish and village in the East Medina liberty, distant 3 miles W. of Ventnor, and 8 S. by E. of Newport.
The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Godshill and the rectory of Niton, joint annual value GBP600, in the gift of Queen's College, Oxford ; the Rev. George Hayton, M.A., is the incumbent. Its church is formed from two ancient chapels, dedicated respectively to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Radegund. The manor of Whitwell, formerly a part of Calbourne, was anciently included in the manor of Gatcombe, which is said to have been held by three brothers in the time of Edward the Confessor. The first mention of Whitwell is found in the roll of landowners, under the Countess Isabella de Fortibus, where De Estur, one of the lords of Gatcombe, is said to hold the manor of Whitwell in demesne. The church is supposed to have been built and endowed by De Estur, Lord of Gatcombe.
