NITON, a village and parish in East Medina liberty, distant 5 miles W, of Ventnor, and 8 1/2 S. of Newport, situated at the S.W. angle of the island, and considered one of the most romantic spots in the Undercliffe district.
A little to the north-west is Blackgang ; here are several handsome mansions and lodging houses, having fine views of the sea; you have also rock and mountain scenery of the most delightful description.
The living is a rectory, with the vicarage of Godshill and curacy of Whitwell. The church (St. John the Baptist) is an ancient structure built of freestone, and consists of nave and south aisle, with a square tower and short spire, and contains two bells.
Near the church are the steps cf an ancient cross.
A large part of the parish is in the Undercliff.
The Baptists have a neat chapel here ; there is also a National and a British school.
On St. Catherine's Point, near Niton, is the lighthouse of the same name. It is a handsome stone tower, 101 feet in height to the turret, and 125 feet to the top of the lantern.
At Undercliff, near to Niton, is the Royal Sandrock hotel, a beautiful spot, near a chalybeate spring, discovered by Dr. Waterworth.
Here is a coast guard station.
