| WOOTTON is a parish situated about 4 miles west from Ryde and 4 north-east from Newport, having the Motherbank on the north and an inlet of the sea on the east; the latter is crossed by causeway on the high road from Ryde to Newport. |

| The church of St. Edmund is an old Gothic stone building, with a Norman doorway : this ancient and interesting church has lately been restored and repaired at a cost of about 500GBP, from plans prepared by Mr. J. Middleton ; a new roof has been put on, the nave re-seated ; the pulpit has been placed in the recess of an old Semi-Norman arch, and the chancel fitted with stalls. An oak lectern has been presented to the church. |

| The village is remarkably clean and neat, the houses rising on each side of Fishbourne Creek. On the one side the banks of the river are steep and irregular and clothed from the very water's edge with flourishing oak woods. This forest scene is contrasted on the other side by the grounds of Fern Hill, of Frederick R. Brodie esq. whose mansion stands at the head of a wide-spreading lawn, sloping to the river, and fringed with a variety of trees and plantations of handsome growth. |
