ST. HELEN'S is a large parish, 4 miles south-east from Ryde and 10 east from Newport, finely situated on the bay called St. Helen's Road, much used in time of war as a rendezvous for the Royal Navy.
It is governed by a Local Board of 12 members.
The ancient church of St. Helen was situated close to the sea side, and the churchyard was so much encroached upon by the sea in the beginning of the last century as to endanger the church, which was pulled down, part of the tower, which is still standing, being left as a sea mark.
The church, re-built in 1717, in a more elevated situation, and again re-built in the year 1831, is an edifice of red brick [so it says!] in the Gothic style.
There are Wesleyan, Free Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels.
The village, called St. Helen's Green, and consisting of stone thatched cottages, stands about half-a-mile to the south-east of the church, and as much inland from the sea, near Brading Harbour.
The Priory, founded for Cluniac monks, about the year 1155, is now the residence of Henley Grose Smith esq. and is beautifully situated on the shore at the head of a spacious lawn, which gently declines from the house to the brink of a high ridge overhanging the sea, and is covered with wood to the water's edge, through which various pleasant walks have been formed : the priory property was afterwards appropriated by Henry VI. and used by him for the building and endowment of Eton College.

OAKFIELD is a hamlet and small village near Ryde.
ST. JOHN's, part of this parish is a suburb of Ryde.
SEA VIEW is a pretty village and sea-bathing place, situated at, the north-east of the, island, the most exquisite rural scenery, besides beautiful views across the channel of Spithead to Portsmouth, directly opposite, with the Sussex coast in the distance : it is 3 miles east from Ryde and a mile north from St. Helen's church. The shore is almost unrivalled for its beauty, and its fine smooth sands render it especially adapted for sea-bathing. There is a suspension pier erected in 1880-1, 1, 000 feet in length. The proprietary chapel, erected in 1850 by the subscription of the residents who visit here in the summer, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of nave and north aisle ; the services are conducted by the Vicar of St. Helen;s. There are two Wesleyan Chapels There is a comfortable inn and several. furnished houses, and in the parish are Sea Grove. the seat of William Anthony Glynn esq. J.P. ; Seafield, of Mrs. Conder ; Sea View House, Henry. Barclay esq. and Fairy Hill, the residence of Rev. William Henry Richards B.A. The principal landowners are William Anthony Glynn esq., J. H. Oglander Glynn esq. and Mrs. Conder.
SPRING VALE is another hamlet, situated between Sea View and Ryde, 2 miles from the latter. The houses in this village are erected along the sea-shore, overlooking the Channel, Ryde pier, Southampton Water, and the Hants and Sussex coasts : to the east are the wooded heights at the back of Sea View ; adjacent is St. Clara, the beautiful castellated mansion of Augustus George Vernon Harcourt esq. and Westridge, the property of Richard Phipps esq. Bathing machines are provided.
NETTLESTONE is a small village a mile north-east from St. Helen's church, and 3 miles south-east from Ryde,
