SANDOWN is a sea-bathing place and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1847 out of the parish of Brading, 9 miles south-east from Newport and 6 south from Ryde, and is beautifully situated at the head of a fine open bay on the south of the island, between Dunnose and Culver Cliff, commanding extensive views of the sea, the cliffs, the Bay of Sandown and some picturesque inland scenery.
The salt water at this part of the island is strong and pure, and the sands, which gradually shelve into the sea, being smooth, firm and free from pebbles, the bathing, for which there is an ample supply of bathing machines, is extremely pleasant.
