GODSHILL is an ancient parish that existed before the compilation of "Domesday Book."
Part of the village is in Arreton parish.
The church of All Saints, a building of stone in the Early English style, stands on an abrupt hill ; it was one of the six churches given by William Fitz-Osborne to his Abbey of Lyra, in Normandy,
The Wesleyans and Baptists have each a chapel here.
Appuldurcombe, a very elegant mansion, once the residence of the second Earl of Yarborough, is now the property of Reginald Freke Williams esq. ; since 1866 it has been occupied as an establishment for educating young gentlemen of the higher classes ; the number of pupils is about 45, ranging from the ago of eight to fourteen in the junior school, and fifteen to nineteen in the senior school, who are prepared for public schools, the navy, army, and the universities. At the highest, spot in the park are the remains of a granite obelisk, former 170 feet high, till struck by lightning in 1845, which was erected to the memory of Sir R. Worsley, who commenced the mansion in 1710, and died before it was finished.
The manor was given, about the latter end of the reign of Henry Ill. to the Abbey of St. Mary de Montisburgh, in Normandy, by Isabella de Fortibus ; it became a cell of Benedictine monks to that monastery, and had lands seized during the wars in France ; it was dissolved in the reign of Henry V. after which, in the reign of Henry VI., it was given to the Minoresses without Aldgate, London, and confirmed to them in the beginning of the reign of Edward IV. : on the site of this priory the mansion now stands.
The area is 6,443 acres, and 23 of water and foreshore ; net rateable value, 12,769 GBP; and the population in 1881 was 1,302 including part of Ventnor.

   Here are two schools, both on the National system, one at Godshill & another at Rookley: the school-house at Rookley was built & supported by the late Mr. John Woodward, who has left 20GBP a year, now reduced to 12GBP, towards its support
