| EAST COWES is an improving town in the parish of Whippingham, 5 miles north from Newport, on the east bank of the river Medina, at its mouth, and across which is a steam ferry to West Coves: it is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1843 from the civil parish of Whippingham, and is governed by a Local Board of Health of twelve members. |
| The church of St. James is a plain structure of stone, in the Norman style; it was built by the late Mr. Nash, and its foundation stone wag laid by her present Majesty, then Princess Victoria, in September, 1831 : it was finished and consecrated in 1833 ; in 1868 it was greatly enlarged and altered, and in 1870 was again enlarged by the addition of a chancel, erected at the sole expense of the Dowager Viscountess Gort. |
| A cemetery of 4 acres was formed in 1877 ; the ground was free gift of her Majesty, and was laid out at a cost of 1,200GBP ; it contains a mortuary chapel, and is under the control of burial board of 9 members, 3 members elected every year. |

| Bridge Yard, the ship-building establishment of Mr. John Samuel White, has a patent slip on which vessels of 700 tons can be hauled up, and there are commodious building sheds: one of the principal branches of this establishment consists in the construction of steam lifeboat launches (on Mr. John White's patent), and which have been extensively introduced into Her Majesty's navy and coast-guard service, as well as throughout the various yacht squadrons ; |

| The proprietors of the Medina Commercial Wharf and District Legal Quay have large storehouses and bonding warehouses, for general merchandise, here and at West Cowes. |
| East Cowes Castle, the residence of Viscount Gort, is large castellated mansion, erected by John Nash, the celebrated architect it stands on the south side of the town in a park of about 60 acres, and consists of several square, octagonal and round towers. |
| Norris Castle, the seat of the Duke of Bedford K.G. is an extensive and magnificent castellated mansion standing in a fine park, upon a bold ascent of the coast, commanding extensive views across the Solent, opposite to the broad entrance to Southampton Water : it was, built in 1799 for Lord Henry Seymour, by James Wyatt, a late eminent architect, and was for several years the residence of Her Majesty when Princess Victoria, and of her mother, the late Duchess of Kent. |
