| The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone in the Norman style, and was built by Hugh Vernon in the reign of Henry I, about the year 1113, but only few traces of the original structure remain. |
| In the churchyard is interred Captain Samuel Walker, of the ill-fated ship "Clarendon," who, on his homeward-bound passage from the West Indies, was wrecked in Chale Bay, on the 11th October, 1836, when 12 of the crew and all the passengers, 13 in number, perished ; 18 are buried here ; 5 were buried in the cemetery of Newport, and the remaining 2 bodies were never recovered. |

| Half a mile from the church is Black Gang Chine, a tremendous chasm : the sides of the Cine are nearly 500 feet in height, shelving down to the shore ; these terminate inland in an overhanging rock 40 feet in height, over which small stream from the top of the Chine falls : the view from the summit comprises the whole of the coast to the Needles. with the Dorsetshire coast, in the distance. |
| Near to the Chine is St. Catherine's Hill, said to be the highest in the island, being upwards of 800 feet above the sea level; also the ancient Manor House, an interesting architectural relic. The Medina river takes its rise at the foot, of this hill, at a place called Hermitage. |
| On the summit is St. Catherine's Tower, a small erection with lantern top, octagonal outside and square inside, being all that remains of a chapel built by one Walter de Godyton, in the your 1323 : the name is still retained, a farm on the west slope of the hill being called Gotten Farm. On the, brow of the hill is an elegant, column, 72 feet high, and visible from the greater part of the island, erected by the late Michael Hoy esq. to commemorate the visit of his Imperial Majesty Alexander I. Emperor of Russia. |
| A military road has been made from Chale church to Freshwater, a distance of 10 1/4 miles in length, in connection with the south coast defences. |
| There is also a Mission Hall erected in 1873, by Mr. Charles Reade, capable of accommodating between three and four hundred persons. |
